Visit Château Raoul

Discover a key monument in Châteauroux

Nestling in the heart of the city on the banks of the River Indre, Château Raoul is a must-see when you stay at our hotel in Châteauroux!

The history of Château Raoul

Construction of Château Raoul began in the 10th century, in the form of a wooden fortress.

However, the fortress was destroyed twice by fire, and it wasn't until the 12th century that the castle was built in stone, at the instigation of Seigneur Raoul de Déols.

Because of its strategic location along the Indre, Raoul's castle was coveted by many enemies over the centuries. This was the case in the 14th century, for example, when the son of the King of England, nicknamed the Black Prince, attempted to take the castle.

The Château was finally bought by the Département de l'Indre at the end of the 18th century and renovated in a neo-Gothic architectural style. Major renovations were undertaken between 2009 and 2011.

Did you know? Château Raoul was named after its owners of the same name for several years. The town of Châteauroux is also named after the château.
